Cavenagh Bridge

"Built in 1869 to link the Civic District on the North Bank with the Commercial District on the South Bank, this is the oldest bridge along the Singapore River in its original form. It is also the first steel suspension bridge in Singapore... Named after Colonel (later Major-General) Orfeur Cavenagh, the Governor of the Straits Settlements (1859-1867)... It was manufactured by P & W MacLellan in Scotland and the parts were shipped here and assembled by Indian convict labour... By the late 1800s, the bridge could not withstand the growing volume of vehicular traffic and Anderson Bridge was opened in 1910 to ease the flow. Cavenagh Bridge thus became a pedestrian bridge." (heritagetrails.sg)

Initially the location of Chinese-owned spice plantations, the hill was first called Mount Stamford, after Sir Stamford Raffles. Its current name is taken from Lt. James Pearl, Commander of the Indiana who bought the hill in 1822. Institutional buildings located here have included the Seaman's Hospital, Tan Tock Seng's Pauper Hospital, and Pearl's Hill Prison a.k.a Outram Road Gaol or H. M. Prisons." Thian Hock Keng Temple 天福宫

"The temple started out as a prayer house located along the shoreline of the Telok Ayer Basin. Immigrants from China built the prayer house dedicated to the goddess Ma Zu (or Tian Hou), protector of seafarers and navigators, between 1821 and 1822... Between 1839 and 1842, extensive reconstruction transformed the prayer house into Thian Hock Keng, which means Temple of Heavenly Happiness." (- National Library Board)
